At the edge of the volcano crater, below the Paradiso Hostel in Laguna De Apoyo, there is a spectacular and very fun bar called The Life Out of the Box Bar.

The LOOTB bar has swinging hammock chairs, lounge chairs, tables and a fully equipped bar which we run everyday.

We created two happy hours: one for the day trippers from 12:30 pm-1:30pm and one in the evening for the overnight guests between 6:30pm and 7:30pm. The happy hour menu includes Victoria & Tona beers, shots of brown & white rum and Nica Libres (coke & rum with lime). Guests can choose any combo of the two options for only C$60 ($2.61).

We love happy hour because it really brings people together and allows guests to get to know each other and us. Happy hour really is a happy hour here at Laguna de Apoyo–conversation is flowing between people from all over the world and everyone is having a great time. How can you not when you’re drinking an ice cold beer in 85 degree weather on the shore of a beautiful lake in tropical Nicaragua?

Our favorite addition we made to the bar is “Shot Out of the Box”. There are two type of shots that we have available: a bannana vannilla aged rum and a maple cinnamon rum–both of which we make here on property. We soak the ingredients in the actual
Flor de Cana 4 year white rum for days, add some sugar and then let the rum soak up all of the flavors. The shots are delicious and don’t require a chaser. Quinn’s favorite is the maple cinnamon while mine is the banana vanilla. The shot is poured and then presented to the customer in a shot glass out of a little cardboard box on a plate.

Our favorite part about the shots is that for every drink sold, we give a notebook to a child to allow them to have a “shot” at persuit their dreams by giving them a simple tool to write in for school, creative writing or just as a personal journal. Guests love both of the drinks and love the concept. They have a good time and by doing so, they’re actually giving back. We love making our guests happy while helping others. Its a win win for everyone.
We’ve made some very good close friends with people traveling through by simply interacting with guests and sharing our story with them. We’ve even got a couple of them to stay a bit longer than expected, just so that we could all hang out another day or two. We love both our bar and
restaurant which attract wonderful people from all over the world.
