The Beers of Guatemala

Guatemala has several types of refreshing light beers that are nice and refreshing after a hard day of work. They’re similar to the beers we have grown to love in Nicaragua, but a bit different. They are sold in cans, bottles and liters.

We, of course, always prefer the more economical option of liters because they’re perfect to share and always fit into our tight budget. Just down the street from our apartment in Panajachel is a great distributor by day and bar by night ran by a nice Italian guy who sells us a whole case of Bravah beers (12 of them) for just 90Q.

That’s our spot to go to for the weekend because by purchasing a whole case from him, each liter of beer comes out to only 7.5Q ($0.94). We can’t find that price anywhere else!

If you’re in Guatemala and like beer, we highly recommend tasting each beer–they each have their own flavor. Each is always best enjoyed in front of a great scene like a rooftop over looking the city or on the street in front of a pulperia.

Below we describe them all based on our own experience with them, but there’s nothing like trying it yourself–and that goes for pretty much everything else in life, right? Right! Cheers friends.

Bravah:

The cheapest of them all and our personal favorite (shocking, right?). We first tried this beer in Nicaragua at our favorite Chinese restaurant and and have grown to love it ever since.

It’s of course best when it is freezing cold on a hot Central American day. These are the beers we get by the case and there’s really no better deal in town. After trying the other beers Guatemala had to offer, we still thought Bravah was the best.ย So it’s nice on the taste buds as well as the wallet! It has more flavor than Ice and tastes pretty similar to Gallo–not enough difference to pay more.

ICE:

The familiar blue can of ICE is one of Guatemala’s lightest beers. Lots of locals and tourists like it because it is light, but we like a little more flavor. It tastes a bit like Victoria Frost (beer in Nicaragua), but less alcohol :). It’s cheaper than Gallo, but more than Bravah. We found that it mainly comes in cans around Pana.

Gallo:

This is Guatemala’s “high end” beer. It is loved by the locals for its taste and is one of the most advertised beers in town. You can get a liter of Gallo at any bar for about 20Q ($2.50), which in the States is a pretty good deal, but in Central America that’s pretty pricey compared to other options. If you ever visit Guatemala, be sure to try them all. We did!
