After we gave to several schools around the lake with Mayan Families, it only made sense that we give back to the kids at their preschool closest to us in Panajachel. The Pana preschool is actually on the same property as the Mayan Families building and has a total of 5 classrooms. It’s one of their biggest preschools in their program so we were excited to give school supplies to as many of their kids as possible.
JB, KK, Caira and I all walked over to the preschool that was just a few blocks from our house with all of our gear and supplies. We spoke with educational development director, Laura, and she brought us into the play ground area to set up. Laura gave us a list of all the kids in the school, which was very helpful to both us and the teachers when it was time to bring out the students.
The first class of students came out in a line and I bent down to talk to them & ask each of them the typical Life Out of the Box questions that we always ask the kids: what their favorite subject in school is and what they want to be when they grow up.
JB coordinated with the teachers as to who was who on the list, while KK took pictures of each child for their profile (see LOOTB Gives) and Caira gave them their supplies. We all had so much fun as each kids that we spoke to had its own cute & unique personality. We all had a few good laughs, including Laura, who was familiar with the kids and helped us out along the way. They were adorable and we were excited to be able to give them all notebooks & pencils that they could use in school right away.
Once we gave to all of the classrooms, we played with the kids on the playground for a bit and then said our goodbyes. At this point we had given school supplies to the kids of Mayan Families preschools in San Jorge la Laguna, Tierra Linda, Santiago and Panajachel–which, in total, came out to giving to hundreds of cute kiddos with this great organization.
We loved Mayan Families and what they were doing for the community and wanted to grow our relationship so that we could work together in giving every kid in their program around Lake Atitlán the tools they needed to educate themselves–even if we weren’t physically there. We were excited for the future and what was ahead for all of us and Life Out of the Box.
If you’re interested in sponsoring any of these cute kids to get them food, clothes and other things they need throughout the year, check out the Mayan Families website www.mayanfamilies.org or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info!
