Our mission at Life Out of the Box is to create a line of products that contributes toward helping children around the world attain education so that they can chase their own dreams. Our bracelets, headbands and key chains all give school supplies to children throughout Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico and Morocco so that they have the tools to be able to learn in class, do homework and get creative. We are proud to have been able to give thousands of children school supplies and we look forward to continue giving to more.
As we develop more products in the LOOTB line, we are also going to be adding other ways to help children with their education. We are excited to announce to you all that Life Out of the Box will start giving meals and nutrient packets for some of our products. Along with this new give back announcement, we are also happy to share with you all a new LOOTB product: BEANIES! For every beanie & shirt that we sell, Life Out of the Box will give 7 meals and/or nutrient packets to those in need.
Why meals and nutrient packets?
Right now, 1 in 7 people around the world go to bed hungry every night and hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. It’s currently estimated that 66 million children enrolled in primary school are undernourished and this number will increase to 82 million by next year.
One of the ways the meals are being donated are through school meals. When students are given a free nutritious meal in school, research has shown that primary school attendance doubles and academic performance improves greatly. This makes complete sense to any of us who have tried to work or study without eating—your brain just doesn’t function the same way as it does when you don’t have fuel. Unfortunately, for many kids, a school lunch is the only meal they will receive all day. School feeding therefore gives families incentive to send their kids to school when it’s one of the only ways to ensure that their child will eat that day.
Hunger isn’t the only issue when it comes to children’s health–some kids get enough calories per day, but are severely malnourished which can cause all kinds of diseases that prevent them from going to school. This hit home for us when we saw this occurring first hand while living in Panajachel as Guatemala is the most malnourished country in Latin America. Therefore, along with these meals, we will also be donating nutrient packets.
Poverty is a major factor as to why hunger exists in the world. Adults living in poverty cannot afford nutritious meals for themselves nor their children. This makes them weaker and less able to earn money that would help them escape poverty and hunger and be able to afford to send their kids to school. This cycle is a poverty trap. Another unfortunate reality is that hunger and malnutrition is inherited; up to 17 million children are born underweight because of inadequate nutrition before and during pregnancy. To contribute toward ending this trap, we will therefore be giving meals to not only children in school, but also to adults who need it.
Making sure children are fed and educated are two huge ways to help break the cycle of poverty. It’s simple—food and nutrients give kids energy to learn and learning empowers them to better their lives and the lives of their family. Together we can make a difference and help break the cycle of poverty. Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world and we must help the future generation obtain this power for a better future.
