Last week was a week full of family, food and giving thanks. It was the perfect time to give school supplies and that’s just what we did, but this time we had a group of awesome students from Arizona State University with us. Jonathon and I packed our car up and drove over 15 hours from Stillwater, OK to Tempe, AZ to meet up with our group of volunteers who were going to help us distribute school supplies to a school in Nogales, Mexico.
Caira (Jonathon’s sister) coordinated the whole group of girls from ASU–Reiley, Taylor, Signe & Malia–to come with us and experience giving LOOTB supplies in another country. Bright and early in the morning, we piled into our cars filled with bags school supplies and set off on another road trip to the Mexico/Arizona border. Once we got to the border, we parked and started loading our backpacks with all of the school supplies we brought with us and gave the run down of what we were going to do that day.
None of the girls had crossed the Mexican border by foot, so for them this was a whole new fun adventure. This was them doing something new, getting out of their comfort zones and living Life Out of the Box.
We walked through the Mexican border and immediately we were all in a whole new world. Spanish was being spoken all around us, street food smells filled our senses and that wonderful adrenaline feeling of being somewhere new and foreign came over each of us. Jonathon, Caira and I had been here before, so we knew just where to go to get some yummy authentic Mexican food before we got started.
After lunch, we all headed to a local liberia to buy as many school supplies as we could carry in our backpacks. We had a few from the States, but we really like purchasing locally from the countries that we give to as it helps their local economy and we enjoy giving our money to these hardworking family run businesses.
With our bags stuffed to the brim of school supplies, we made our way to the big red school in the center of town to empty out our bags and get every notebook & pencil we had into the hands of students. We set our stuff up and got ready just outside of the school before the kids got out.
The school bell rang and the children came swarming. They were all so polite and fun to talk to. This is the best part of Life Out of the Box and we were so excited to be sharing this experience with others. We ended up giving school supplies to hundreds of students that day on behalf of our customers.
The smiles, hearing what the students want to be when they grow up and the gratitude of them & their parents is what Life Out of the Box is all about.
After all of the kids left, we collected our empty bags and made our way back towards the border as the sun was setting. It was a day full of excitement, giving, new experiences and smiling faces. When we all got back in the car to head back towards Tempe, our bodies were exhausted but our hearts were filled with happiness.
Thank you to all of our customers who allowed this to be possible and to our volunteers who helped us distribute the supplies. We hope that this experience inspires you all to get out of your comfort zone & make a difference–because you CAN.
If you purchased a LOOTB bracelet during 10/21/14-12/1/14 YOU helped make this giving trip possible + we will be sending you an email to see the child you gave to!
