Ah, San Juan del Sur. Where it all began. In May 2012, Jonathon and I left everything behind in California and bought a one-way ticket to start a brand new life in the beautiful expat beach town of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. It was a perfect fit after analyzing our needs and wants in a new home overseas–Spanish speaking, warm climate, near a beach, picturesque scenes around every corner. Little did we know that we would fall more in love with this little town and the people in it more than we could have ever imagined.
We found family here. We found friends. We found memories that will last forever. We found a new way of living. We found a home. We found a new life.
We also found inspiration around every corner: the brightly colored buildings, the uneven sidewalks, the reggaeton music, the colorful flowers, the green palm trees, the turquoise ocean, the floating fishing boats in the cove, the rusty sheet metal roofs, the live band rooftop dance parties.
After just weeks of living there, we were changed people. We volunteered with schools and non-profits and found that there was a need for school supplies. We read Spanish with the children at their school, we met kids like Danny, we played games at recess that made us laugh until our stomachs hurt. We saw poverty that we didn’t know existed, but also met some of the happiest people we’ve ever met. We found that the happiest people don’t have everything, they just make the best of everything.
We are forever grateful for what the town of San Juan del Sur gave to us. It gave us so much more than words can describe, but hopefully these pictures will give you a visual idea of what it was like. It is one of my favorite places in the world, it truly stole my heart. If you get a chance, go see it for yourself. With a completely open mind, San Juan del Sur might just help you find yourself.
